How Art Can Make a House a Home (Without Breaking the Bank)

Decorating is one of the most exciting parts of remodeling or buying a new home, and potentially the most daunting. When you first saw your house, you probably imagined each room and what it would be ideal for. To you, that empty sun-room was the perfect place for lounging and relaxing. And you dreamt about how that spare bedroom could be turned into an energizing and productive office. But even though you have the perfect picture in your head of how the space will make you feel, you might not have the perfect picture of how to achieve that atmosphere.

Whether you are more into minimalism or an eclectic feel — art is an ideal way to decorate your home and give it just the atmosphere you’re looking for.  Photographs, paintings, and prints are a great medium for decorating your home. They can easily be switched among rooms or packed up when moving to a new home. This art is versatile; you can use it as the starting point for a decorating scheme or add it in to give a finishing touch to an already furnished space.

Despite the power of art to transform your home, picking pieces can be intimidating. Some incorrectly assume that art comes in only two varieties, cheap and mass-produced or beautiful and expensive. Others just believe this should be left to the professionals. However, there are many ways to find affordable, beautiful artwork you can be proud of. So don’t be stopped by false assumptions.

The best place to start looking is your own community. There are many places where you can find information on local artists, including universities, city or regional art commissions, art fairs, or news articles on local art awards. By asking a few questions to the right people, you will probably be surprised by a bustling local art scene that you weren’t even aware of.

Some larger cities even have their own CSA’s, which in this case are Community Supported Art memberships (as opposed to the more common agricultural ones.) By paying a relatively low seasonal or yearly fee, you will get access to multiple pieces of art delivered to your doorstep.

One last tip: don’t worry about getting something to please or impress other people. The art you buy for your home should please you and help create the homey atmosphere that you always knew was possible.
