Vinson Mortgage Charity of Choice: Gateway to Hope
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and breast cancer affects tens of thousands of people each year. Our Charity of Choice in October is Gateway to Hope to raise awareness. They provide support and financial assistance to individuals who have been diagnosed or at a high risk for breast cancer.
Breast cancer will affect 1 out of every 8 women in their lifetimes. While detection methods and treatment options have improved, more than 40,000 women are expected to die from breast cancer this year alone. Breast cancer also affects one in 1,000 American men.
Getting treatment can be incredibly expensive, and some insurance plans won’t cover certain diagnostic tests or treatments that are necessary to beat breast cancer. Gateway to Hope provides support to people who need not only navigating their treatment options, but also handling the immense financial cost associated with their care.
Gateway to Hope
In 2005, Dr. David Caplin and Dr. Marlys Schuh, both surgeons, came together to start Gateway to Hope. The mission of the organization is to provide comprehensive, donated medical care and financial assistance to uninsured or underinsured individuals in need. Their patients are either getting treatment for or are at high risk for developing breast cancer. Regardless of insurance, Gateway to Hope provides support and knowledge to their patients to ensure they have access to effective cancer care, no matter what.
Many of Gateway to Hope’s patients don’t have sufficient financial resources or insurance coverage for their care. Since 2005, Gateway to Hope has helped more than 1,000 breast cancer patients face the worst news imaginable. They offer invaluable support and resources to them and their families. Services provided to patients range from financial assistance with mortgage and utility payments to the full spectrum of surgical and medical care, at little to no cost. This year, 300 patients will receive support, which represents an almost 25% increase from 2015.
Insurance Premium Program
Through its innovative programs, Gateway to Hope is able to provide assistance that literally saves lives. The Insurance Premium Program, for example, provides direct access to comprehensive care. Patients get to choose their physicians and facilities, and Gateway to Hope assists with the insurance premium costs. Another program to provide financial assistance is Thelma’s Gift fund. It helps patients cover the cost of their regular financial obligations that they may not be able to meet while receiving treatment.
Gateway to Hope hosts a number of local events in the St. Louis area to raise money to fund their efforts. This includes patient treatment funds, financial assistance, and fundamental resources to assist in their patients’ care. They fund programs like the Insurance Premium Program entirely through corporate and private sector donations.
